Eirene Switzerland is a secular NGO that has been active in development cooperation since 1963. In the countries where we are active, our objective is to strengthen and enhance local dynamics in favor of the promotion of peace and human rights. We specialize in cooperation through the exchange of people, i.e. the sending of qualified professionals from Switzerland to support the development projects of our local partners, in our three main areas of operation: Central America (Nicaragua, El Salvador), Quisqueya (Haiti) and the African Great Lakes region (Rwanda, Uganda, DRC). These professionals have the status of « volunteer ».

The local partner:

FIDA-Uganda is one of the leading women’s rights organizations in Uganda and the pioneer in the field of legal aid and public legal education in sub-Saharan Africa. Established in 1974, FIDA-Uganda has a proven track record in promoting and defending human rights, with a particular focus on women’s rights. Specifically, the partner seeks to promote human rights as set out in international, regional and national legal documents. The organization uses a feminist and rights-based approach to address the underlying causes of abuse, including patriarchy, injustice, and exclusion. As a feminist organization, FIDA-Uganda uses multiple strategies to advance law and policy reform for the protection of women, including women’s advocacy development, public interest dispute resolution and various other forms of public engagement. Through the establishment and strengthening of sustainable and effective legal and structural mechanisms, FIDA-Uganda also supports and analyses the action of the Ugandan government, a key player in the protection and promotion of women’s rights. In particular, in order to reduce injustices against women, FIDA-Uganda assesses the functioning of the justice system in Uganda and its adherence to international human rights standards. Finally, FIDA-Uganda has observer status with the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR).

Purpose of the position

The main objective of the position is to contribute to the improvement of the quality and quantity of FIDA-Uganda’s research outputs, leadership and capacity building of women lawyers, FIDA members, women’s groups and community legal volunteers on women’s rights, gender and access to justice through the FIDA-Uganda Leadership Academy.

Secondary Objectives:

  • To strengthen the collaboration with academic institutions and strategic partners.
  • To improve the quantity, quality and impact of FIDA-Uganda’s research on public policy and legal reform.
  • To increase the international visibility of FIDA-Uganda through publications and academic interventions.


Activities and tasks:

Under the supervision of the Research and Fundraising Manager, the volunteer will assume the following responsibilities:

Research Component:

  • Identify new areas of research related to the promotion of women’s rights and access to justice by participating in seminars, forums and workshops, and make recommendations to FIDA-Uganda management
  • Support research work, including developing methodologies and tools for data collection and analysis
  • Perform data collection, data analysis, and report writing.
  • Write and edit commentaries, blog posts and articles on issues related to FIDA-Uganda’s work. 
  • Write and supervise articles for the organization’s quarterly newsletters

Training component

  • Design, plan and facilitate trainings on women’s rights, advocacy and gender justice legislation as part of the Leadership Academy.
  • Support the development and maintenance of FIDA-Uganda’s e-learning platform
  • Develop training programs and content for FIDA-Uganda’s face-to-face and virtual trainings as part of the Leadership Academy.

Your profile:

  • Nationality: Swiss or strong ties to Switzerland (resident, study, work, etc.);
  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in law, political science, gender studies, human rights or any other relevant discipline;
  • A minimum of two years’ professional experience in research, advocacy or training related to women’s rights and social justice.
  • Excellent analytical and writing skills;
  • Proven experience in research design and implementation (quantitative and qualitative approaches);
  • Solid expertise in the development of educational content and training facilitation;
  • In-depth knowledge of legal reforms and public policies related to women’s rights;
  • Mastery of online training platform management tools and digital media;
  • Excellent command of English (written and oral).
  • Rigor and professional commitment;
  • Excellent time management and planning skills;
  • Ability to communicate, autonomy, teamwork and open-mindedness;
  • Ability to accept local living conditions and to integrate into a human project in a complex context;
  • Willingness to actively contribute to the Southern partner’s initiatives;
  • Clean criminal record at the time of departure.

Specificities of the position:

Only applications from Swiss people or those with a strong connection to Switzerland (residents, years of study, etc.) will be considered.

A volunteer engagement implies receiving a living allowance instead of a salary. Associative involvement is expected, particularly in terms of information work and fundraising in Switzerland (animation of a support group).

Terms of employment :

  • Coverage of round-trip travel expenses;
  • Coverage of living expenses on site;
  • Coverage of Swiss social insurance during the period of assignment (AVS, unemployment, sickness, repatriation, etc.);
  • On-site support by a regional coordinator during the mission;
  • Certificate of employment and pay for return at the end of the mission;
  • Possibility of assignment as a couple and/or family.
